LOCAL PAINTERS IN SANTA ROSA, SONOMA COUNTY, AND NAPA COUNTY GIVE TIPS ON CHOOSING COLORS WITH A PARTNER

As your local painters in Santa Rosa, Sonoma County, and Napa County, we sometimes come into the picture after people have already chosen the colors to paint the interior and/or exterior of their home. Sometimes a client comes to us and wants input about the colors they’re considering, and we can give them information about what the colors will look like when they’re actually on the house. (For instance, if the customer is going for something subtle, we can tell them if the color scheme won’t look so subtle seen in large quantities.) And sometimes, a couple comes to us and can’t agree on a color scheme at all. They each have a scheme they want, and neither will budge. We’re not going to get in the middle of that! So here are some tips for coming to an agreement on colors. Of course, we can always give our professional opinion of what the colors will look like after a job is done, but there are many color schemes that will look great and personal preference is the only factor. If that’s the case, remember these 5 things.

5 Tips for Choosing Colors with a Partner

  1. Slow down and explain why the colors of your home are so important to you in the first place.
  2. Talk about each other’s opinions respectfully. You might think your spouse’s color choices will make your house look like a peacock, but people actually have emotional attachment to colors they love. Ridiculing them won’t help.
  3. Get input from friends. Don’t put just one friend on the spot, ask a few people what they think. We do have good ideas after all our years as local painters in Santa Rosa, Sonoma County, and Napa County, but we’re not the only ones with a good eye for color.
  4. Bargain. Let your partner have his or her color choice if you can choose the kitchen cabinets or something. We don’t suggest letting them, say, choose the number of children you have.
  5. If you suddenly recognize that the colors of your home seem more important to your partner than to you, stop debating and tell them. “You seem to care about this more than I thought.” You don’t need to yell, “Fine, have it your way.” Making your partner happy will probably make you happier than getting the colors you want.
